Take the Course to…

Remove Points from Your Record

You may attend a driver improvement clinic once every two (2) years to reduce an accumulated demerit point total on your driving record. Successful completion of this clinic will remove up to five (5) points from your record.

Satisfy a DMV Requirement

If you were ordered by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to attend a driver improvement clinic, you will have 90 days to finish the program. Successful completion of the program will remove up to five (5) demerit points from your driving record. The number of points removed will be determined by the DMV, and the credits earned here will be applied to the demerit points from your chronologically earliest offense.

Satisfy a Court Requirement

If you were ordered by a judge to attend a driver improvement clinic, verify with your court that it will accept an online course. It is your responsibility to determine if your court accepts this computer-based driver improvement course to satisfy court-required attendance. It is also your responsibility to turn in your Certificate of Completion to the court prior to your assigned due date. The number of points removed from your record, if any, are determined by the DMV. Students must submit the court's written authorization for point reduction before any point reduction will be awarded.

Obtain an Insurance Discount

Insurance carriers may offer discounts to policyholders under the age of 55 who successfully complete a DMV-licensed driver improvement clinic. Be sure to confirm with your agent whether your insurance provider offers this benefit.

Learn Great Safe-Driving Tips

Of course, if your goal is simply to become a safer, more responsible driver, our course is filled with helpful defensive driving tips — and it's fun, too!

Note: Students who qualify (not Court- or DMV-ordered) may elect to use course completion for safe driving points OR for an insurance discount, but not both.

Completing the Course

The online driver improvement clinic course is an eight-hour course and is designed to rehabilitate problem drivers. The course must be completed in its entirety prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Completion.

To benefit from the course, you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.

Customers directed by a court must provide documentation from the court before safe driving points can be awarded.

Student identification verification will be varied throughout training and prior to taking the final test to ensure that the person taking the course is the same person taking the final test.

The online driver improvement course and final test must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver improvement clinic. No paper test is permitted.

Completions are processed within 24 business hours of your passing (Monday – Friday). As part of completion processing, notification of your completion is electronically submitted directly to the DMV, and an email is generated and sent to you with an electronic version (PDF) of your official Certificate of Course completion attached. If you are completing the course for a court order, it is your responsibility to turn in the Certificate of Completion to the court on or before your due date.

The DMV is committed to promoting transportation safety through the certification of quality driver training programs. If you have any comments or concerns about this course, call our toll-free number: 1-877-885-5790.

Note: If you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) or committed an offense while operating a commercial motor vehicle, and you are required to attend a driver improvement clinic, you must successfully pass a commercial driver improvement clinic (http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/citizen/drivers/comclinics.asp) designed specifically for commercial drivers.
